It’s hard to make generalizations when it comes to developing a skin care regimen. After all, different people will have different skin types, different skin conditions, etc. That is why the age-old question of whether or not skin clarifying toners are necessary is a little complicated. The first thing to understanding the question – and therefore arriving at an answer – is to look at exactly what a clarifying toner does.
What does a clarifier do?
Clarifying toners are designed to tighten up pores, extract excessive oil from the skin, remove dead skin cells and to clear blemishes. They are designed to be used after the cleansing phase of your skin care regimen. At Apothederm, our clarifying toner removes impurities that can clog up and rob the skin of its texture by utilizing its main ingredients – peptides, green tea and antioxidants. (Many other clarifiers use harsh astringents like alcohol and witch hazel as their active ingredients.) At the same time, ingredients in our products such as aloe, cucumber and chamomile help to calm and soothe the skin. Finally, clarifiers also help remove make-up which can in turn make other skincare products work more effectively allowing them to be applied more easily.
Who needs a clarifier?
With all that said, you might ask, “Is there anyone who would not benefit by using a clarifier?” While there isn’t anyone who wouldn’t benefit from using a clarifying toner, there is plenty of research that indicates it is particularly useful for people who have uncommonly oily skin or who have acne. People who have acne-prone and oily skin benefit greatly from products that exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells allowing new ones to grow in their place. Thus, the careful extraction of pore-clogging grime, oil and irritants helps treat and prevent acne breakouts. At Apothederm we use a three prong approach to helping people with acne prone skin. We do this with our Acne Clarifying system which includes our Clarifying Treatment, 1oz our Brightening cleanser, 6oz and our Clarifying Toner, 6oz.
So, the short answer to whether or not a clarifier would benefit you is – yes. Clarifiers are helpful for most of us but they are particularly useful for people with excessively oily or acne-prone skin. The benefits can be profound for people with these types of skin conditions and one can seamlessly add a clarifying toner to one’s skin care regimen.
